Everest Base Camp 2014

EBC

Join us in April 2014 for a once in a lifetime journey to Nepal…… land of the lovely Sherpa people, the Himalayas and, of course, famous Mount Everest.

Why travel to Nepal with Natural Trekking? The key to a succesful trek is good acclimatization and this cannot be rushed – altitude rules!  Statistics show that the more days taken the better the chance of success.  With this in mind we have designed our trek to give you the optimum opportunity to reach your goal of Everest Base Camp.   In addition to extra acclimatization days on the trek we have  included extra days in Kathmandu before and after the trek.   This gives you time to rest from your flight, adjust to the new time zone and ensure that you have ample time to connect to your international flight on the return.

Our primary concern is that you have a safe, enjoyable and memorable trek!

Day 21 – 26 Kathmandu, Sunday May 19 to Friday May 24, 2013

I have decided to put this past week on one page as there isn’t too much to tell.  The excitement of arriving back in Kathmandu wears off fairly quickly and now we entertain ourselves while we wait for our international flights home.

It is always wise to add at least 3 or 4 days on to the end of any trek involving Lukla as it is better to wait in Kathmandu rather than miss an international flight.  However that being said, there is only so much to do before boredom sets in.  I am enjoying my down time as I know when I get home I will have to hit the ground running as summer is busy tour season and in a short 3.5 months I am off again to climb Kilimanjaro with clients!  I love my job!

Unfortunately Charles & Spencer did not feel well for a good majority of the 4 day stay in Kathmandu.  Thankfully they had one of the nice new renovated rooms with a north american style toilet and a big screen TV!   I suffered a bit as well but seem to fair a wee bit better.  We would seem to take turns feeling poorly and many times it was shortly after a meal.  You feel good, you eat, and then you don’t feel so good any more.

We entertained ourselves wandering the streets of Thamel and watching incredible monsoon rains from the lobby.  One of the days it rained 53mm in 4 hours and totally flooded the city!

Two days before we arrived back here, they was a huge fire next door to the hotel.  Apparently there was a short (not surprisingly considering the maze of electrical wires everywhere) in the wires which started the fire and shortly after, the gas tanks they use in the kitchens exploded setting about 6 business on fire.  One of them was the oldest book store in Thamel reportedly having a book more than 100 years old.  The fire raged on and those that were here said it was incredible to watch the lack of firetrucks and high pressure hoses to put it out.  Because of huge traffic jams everywhere it took over 1/2 hour for the first firetruck to arrive and then they ran out of water, had to leave and took another 1/2 to get back here.  Needless to say we are so lucky to have the facilities we do in Canada!  It took over 9 hours to put out and thankfully there were only a few people with minor injuries.  When we arrived 2 days later the fire was still smouldering and just yesterday there is still a portion that is smouldering!  Workers are already in the ruins (looks extremely unsafe) salvaging what they can.  I don’t imagine anyone had insurance and now their whole livelihood has gone up in smoke.  Such a sad situation!

Wednesday night the guys flew out of Kathmandu home – I will miss them as I am here for 2 more days!  Yesterday Bikesh saw on Facebook that their flight in Hong Kong was delayed for 4 hours – OMG, poor guys!  I hope they are home safe & sound now.

Yesterday was another monsoon day here.  I have had the pleasure of meeting with many of the staff here at the hotel and was very lucky to be treated to a site inspection and lunch at the sister hotel, the Park Village Resort near the Shivapuri National Park.  The hotel is fantastic has more of a resort feel to it.  Once I returned to the hotel, Bikesh came and we planned to head back to visit his place to visit with his wife Anita.  It had stopped downpouring so we started on our journey only to be caught in another monsoon half way.  We purchased an umbrella and sat on some stairs for about 1/2 hour waiting for it to subside.  The streets looked like rivers and bicycles, motorbikes and cars were still attempting to manage.  We finally made it to their house and were drenched – thankfully it is so warm here.

After a lovely dinner of dahl bhat, I caught a taxi back to the hotel.  It was quite the ride and I felt sorry for the taxi driver having to manoeuver his way back.  The street in front of the burned businesses was flooded in about a foot of water!

Today I am relaxing, packing and will head to the airport around 8pm.  I pray that my flights are on time back home.

Day 20 Lukla to Kathmandu, Saturday May 18, 2013

I awaken before my alarm before the sun has risen.  Before putting on my glasses I look towards the window and my heart sinks………… it looks like fog to the ground.  I put on my glasses and look again and realize it is steam on the window and when I clean the window, there is glorious clear sky still indigo blue or pre-dawn.  Hallelujah!  Flights will be operating today and ours is the first flight!

I bound out of bed with limitless energy and get ready and pack my bag for the last time.  Bikesh knocks on the tour and we just grin at each other – we are getting our flight today!  Thank you to my Mom in heaven who is always looking out for me!!

The mood is very jovial as we meet in the dining room for breakfast and watch the sun hit the peaks with fresh caps of snow.  What a beautiful sight.  Amazing what the sun does for the spirit, especially after so many days of gloom and drizzle.  It is close to the monsoon season so it is to be expected though!

A precisely 10 minutes to 6 Bikesh declares it is time to head to the airport.  Tshiri & Ishower have rejoined us for this short walk.  They are all smiles; Ishower as he is returning to Kathmandu with us and Tshiri as he is starting his 2 day journey back down to his village.

When we arrive at the airport, it is once again organized chaos and I notice two long lines of people and then a short one with Bikesh & our luggage at the front – how does he do that?  Once we are checked in, we find out how he does it – he knows who to form allegiances with and to tip them well.  Charles just smiled and said – he’s the man!  The young lady that owns the teahouse we stayed in was helping us get our bags on and checked in first.  Bikesh let out a whoop when we received our boarding passes and very proudly pointed to the number 1 on the pass.  That means first flight out no matter what time it arrives.  In most airports this wouldn’t be a big deal, but here in Lukla when you could be stranded for days by the weather this is momentous!

After saying our goodbyes to Tshiri – gosh we will miss him, his laugh, his dancing and his music – we head into the boarding area and wait.  Around 6:15am a siren sounds and Bikesh’s eyes and grin are huge – the plane is enroute.  About 1/2 hour later not only 1 but 4 aircraft land and in a matter of minutes they are unloaded, reboarded and we take off 10 minutes before schedule.  We are on our way.

The flight was quite smooth and the day was glorious.  Behind us clouds were forming so I pray that many others got out before the end of the day.  We landed and were at the Kathmandu Guest House before 9am.  It was like coming home.  The hotel is so welcoming and friendly and a great place to stay.

We relaxed for a few hours and then Bikesh came to take us to a monastery that was only open on Saturdays.  He has never been there so the adventure would carry on.  We took taxi part of the way and it in itself was an adventure – it was ok for Bikesh and I as we are so short but a bit torturous for tall guys like Spencer & Charles.  Thankfully it was only for a short period of time.

We hiked over an hour up to the top of the hill that the monastery was situated on.  Both Charles & I are feeling pretty good, however it is now Spencer’s turn.  The monastery was gorgeous however it was too hazy for a good view of the city.  We took our time coming down and then realized that Spencer was not well we quickly got a taxi and back to the hotel.  Spencer stayed in bed the balance of the evening, Charles rested still nursing his stomach and I went over to the New Orleans cafe and had an early dinner.

Day 19 Phakding to Lukla, Friday May 17, 2013

2610m to 2860m 3 long hours!

Well it may have been the chicken as my stomach was not well most of the night.  Poor Bikesh, he now has 2 sickies and a lively ‘Springbok’ on his hands.   Charles is feeling a bit more human, so him & Spencer went ahead with Tshiri & Ishower.  I, very slowly, made my way and although the journey is not far to Lukla, it seemed like forever!

We arrived around 11am and shortly after had lunch.  The guys decided to head out to ‘Starbucks’ for a tea & goodie and I hung around the teahouse with Bikesh.  The weather was was dreary with intermittent rain and absolutely NO flights coming in or out.  Many people had been waiting several days to get out so they were chartering helicopters.  The more days without flights the more expensive it got to get on the heli.  Someone told me it had started at $200 per person and today it was as high as $600 per person.  Fingers crossed that it clears for our flight in the morning.  Bikesh & I have been lucky so far so let’s hope that luck holds out.

Around 4pm I meandered to the Starbucks as well and had a latte and cookie – yum – and read a bit.  We all met back at the teahouse for an early dinner as our wake up time tomorrow is 4:45am.

Tshiri and Ishower were very happy to be back in Lukla.  Tshiri even got a nice new haircut and they were able to visit with friends.  We gave them their well deserved tips and they both just beamed from ear to ear!  Tshiri’s wife had asked for him to bring home a huge plastic barrel which she will use to make Roksi (rice wine).  Too funny.  They left us very shortly after – to celebrate with friends I am sure!

I had the chicken sizzler (I know chicken again – however Bikesh said in Lukla the chicken would be fresh) and it settled my stomach nicely – not sure why.  We were all tucked in our beds around 8pm.

Day 1 Kathmandu, Monday April 29th

Awakened at 6am by a cacophony of  birds, dogs and Nepali heading off to work,  a beautiful day is dawning.

Amazingly I managed to sleep for another 5 hours and was ready to greet the day.  The breeze outside on my patio (yes a gorgeous large patio) is fresh and cool with  smells of coffee wafting up to entice me to breakfast.  I succumb as I realize I am quite hungry – travel does that to one.

Breakfast is a full buffet and before long the temperature has risen to a balmy 25C.  Bikesh arrives at 9:30am and after a short visit, Charles and Spencer head off to discover Thamel in all its glory.  Bikesh and I tend to details for the trek and catch up on each other’s lives.   It seems like just last month that I saw him, and the city is still so familiar.  Did I say I loved it here!

As the day progresses it is increasingly hotter & hotter – one sign said 35C!  Hot!  Best to enjoy it though as in a few days we will be shivering in the mountains.

Once the sun set and it cooled off a wee bit we wandered just across the street to the New Orleans Cafe for dinner – a lovelypatio spot that Charles says does look like a cafe in New Orleans.  They have great food, although not Nepali food, and we all enjoyed our meals.  Starting to yawn and nod, it is time for me to head to sleep.

A great first day!

Khumbu Ice Fall Doctor recommends Urban Poles

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These are photos of Nampka Sherpa.  In 1970 & 1971 he went through the Khumbu Icefall on Mt. Everest 56 times fixing ropes & ladders.  He was with the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) for 31 years from 1973 to 2003.  He was known as one of the Khumbu Ice Fall Doctors.

He now owns a teahouse next to the oldest Gompa (Monastery) in the Khumbu/Everest region.  He was very intrigued by our Urban Poles and was asking all sorts of questions about them.  Nancy, one of the ladies in my group and a good friend said “Even the Ice Fall Doctor recommends Urban Poles”!
